The training program for the NOAA 96th BOTC is intense. The classes are taught
by the USMMA Continuing
Education staff. Below are some photos of life at the academy.
|
| |

Tests, tests, and more tests. Ensign Zezula and Ensign Imahori are taking
their exam in trim and stability. They passed with flying colors.
|
| |

Ensigns Moser and Jones learn about celestial navigation from Commander Jim
Hall. The ensigns are taught by USMMA Continuing Education staff.
|
| |

Ensign Stark does some rapid radar plotting in the early hours of the morning
in preparation for an upcoming test. The ensigns must obtain 90 percent or
higher on their exam in order to pass.
|
| |

The Poseidon crew try to keep warm by crowding around a fire locker. The
ensigns from left to right are: Karlson, Ash, Miller, Jones, and Slover.
|
| |

Ensigns Jones, Slover, and Ash keep their heads warm with these non-regulation
caps while aboard the Poseidon. The Poseidon is a small twin-screw vessel
used for small boat handling.
|
| |

Ensigns Imahori, Moser, and Ellis take a break after docking the Growler
along the Throgs Neck Bridge. The Growler is a tug used at USMMA to train
the ensigns in small boat handling.
|
| |

Ensigns Karlson and Fritzler don their official "best-hydrographers-of-the-west"
look. They are headed to the NOAA Ship
Rainier in April. If only we can teach Ensign Karlson to wear his NOAA
cap correctly...
|
| |

Tugboat Ted (a.k.a. Weather Ted) is one of the USMMA Continuing Education
staff. He teaches the ensigns small boat handling and meteorology. He's well known for his tall tales and his bowline knot ties.
|
| |

After a late night, Ensign Ash takes full advantage of the break before
firefighting begins. Gotta keep awake and alert when putting out those fires!
|
| |

This photo was taken at Bethpage Fire School. Ensigns Miller, Karlson, and
Jones fight this oil fire while a trainer looks on. Though the entire class
ended the day soaking wet and covered in black, it was one of the most exciting
experiences they've had.
|
| |

After a full day of classes, the ensigns need some relaxation. Ensigns Roberts
and Fritzler take a break at one of the many restaurants in
Great Neck, a village just
a few miles from the academy.
