The 98th Basic Officer Training Class commenced on January 10th at the USMMA, Kings Point, New York.  The class includes 16 newly commissioned Ensigns and a Lieutenant, a transfer from the Navy, who will spend the first few days with the group.  After the initial week of NOAA Corps orientation, the officers will begin an intense 12-week training regime tackling a variety of nautical science subjects.  The staff and facilities at the Merchant Marine Academy will not only provide the ensigns with a top-notch training opportunity, but also valuable hands-on experience as well.  All of the officers know what is expected of them, and are eager to step-up to the challenges awaiting them.
